In our society, sex workers are seen very negatively. Sex Workers Outreach Project, or SWOP, says this negative view allows for exploitation and violence against sex workers. SWOP wants to redefine how sex workers are seen in our society. The group advocates for human rights and works to have prostitution decriminalized. SWOP also provides a safe community for sex workers. This is especially important as people working in the sex trade face unique challenges. SWOP asserts that people in this industry aren’t all victims; some choose the lifestyle. SWOP says sex workers feel they are helping others, and that they have freedom, independence, and they feel a sense of power. SWOP is working to end the stereotypes and abuse.

In this country, breastfeeding rates for African American women are much lower than for women of other ethnicities. This low rate concerns health professionals since studies have shown that breastfeeding for at least a year produces multiple health benefits for both mother and child. For women, breastfeeding can delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes and can reduce breast cancer risk. This article covers breastfeeding benefits in detail and discusses the cultural, social, and media pressures that currently influence a woman’s decision to breastfeed. Several resources designed to support black women in breastfeeding are also highlighted in the article.

Ever wonder what your chances of pregnancy are when taking birth control? The Depo Provera shot is 99% effective when taken on time. However, there is the 1% chance that you could still get pregnant. No birth control pill, shot, IUD, or other device protects from pregnancy 100%. That is why a back-up form of contraception, like a condom, is recommended during all sexual intercourse. Condoms also perform another important function in preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Birth control does not prevent disease. If you have any questions about birth control or STDs, make sure to talk with your doctor.

Due to a huge backlash from supporters, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation reversed a decision to stop funding Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings. The television program Inside Story hosted a discussion over this issue with Judy Norsigian and Tara McGuinness. Norsigian is the Executive Director of Our Bodies, Ourselves, and is also a senior policy analyst with Independent Women’s Forum and Hadley Heath. McGuinness is senior V.P. for communications at the Center for American Progress. The major topic of conversation focused on how much damage U.S. politics and conservative groups have caused to women’s health. The controversy appears to be far from over on this sensitive topic.

Beauty queen Jenna Talackova shared the trials she faced growing up transgendered in an interview with Barbara Walters. Recently, Talackova was disqualified from the Ms. Universe Canada competition because she wasn’t a “naturally born female.” This decision was quickly reversed, but it placed Talackova in the spotlight as a transgendered rights activist. Talackova knew she was different by age four. Her journey to become female started as a child. She grew out her hair, wore girls’ clothing, and started hormone treatments by eighth grade. She had a sexual reassignment surgery at 19. Legally, she is female. The pain Talackova endured was ultimately rewarding. Now she is committed to helping other people with her story and actions.

For years, experts have questioned the existence of vaginal orgasms. Recent studies suggest they are real, but not all scientists agree. Some believe the internal part of the clitoris and the vagina are linked, so it’s impossible to have a purely vaginal orgasm. However, evidence shows that different areas of the brain are activated when a woman reaches clitoral orgasm versus vaginal orgasm. Recent research has also questioned the purpose of an orgasm. For example, when stimulation is applied to the G-spot, a woman’s pain threshold increases tremendously. Theoretically, this may help during childbirth.
